The university’s modern identity brings together two ideas that have shaped Jinsung Astra across generations: truth as a foundation, and ambition directed beyond familiar limits.
JINSUNG (眞星)
“True Star”
The original Jinsung name dates to the institution’s founding in 1908 and reflects scholarship grounded in truth, discipline, and integrity.
ASTRA
“Stars”
Formally incorporated into the university’s name in 1976, Astra represents the institution’s outward-looking academic mission and pursuit of excellence beyond ordinary boundaries.
THE EIGHT-POINTED STAR
Historic university emblem
The eight-pointed star predates the Astra name and became one of Jinsung’s enduring academic symbols before being incorporated into the modern university crest.
THE MOTTO
Grounded in truth, reaching toward the cosmos.
진리에 뿌리내리고, 우주를 향하여
The motto unites the university’s oldest principles with the ambition represented by the Astra identity.

On December 9, 1908, Jinsung Institute was established in Hanseong. The university continues to observe December 9 as Founding Day, commemorating the institution’s origins and more than a century of academic life.

Jinsung Daedongje
JANU’s annual university festival, held each May.
Each May, Jinsung Astra National University gathers for Jinsung Daedongje, a campus-wide celebration of student life, performance, culture, and community. Programs extend through Main Campus, with student organizations, colleges, athletics programs, performers, and university offices participating throughout the festival period.
Events extend through Main Campus, with student booths, exhibitions, performances, food areas, organization showcases, and evening programs centered around JANU’s major gathering spaces and cultural venues.
