Jinsung Astra National University traces its beginnings to Jinsung Institute, founded in Seoul on December 9, 1908.

What began as a single educational institution developed across more than a century of academic, civic, and institutional change. Jinsung grew into a collegiate institution, reopened its academic community after a period of national disruption, received its national charter, and continued expanding into new fields of teaching and research.

The adoption of Astra into the university’s official identity in 1976 marked another stage in that development. Drawing from the institution’s long-standing association with the star, the name reflected an increasingly outward-looking university—one committed not only to preserving knowledge, but to extending its boundaries.

Later decades brought expanded research infrastructure, broader academic offerings, major campus development, and significant investment in collegiate athletics.

Today, JANU continues to develop from the institution established in 1908 while carrying forward the principles that have shaped it across generations.

The name of Jinsung Astra National University reflects two ideas that have remained central to the institution: being grounded in what can be known while continuing to reach toward what has yet to be discovered.

Jinsung (眞星) brings together the ideas of truth and the star—an image of knowledge guided by inquiry, clarity, and direction.

Astra, from the Latin for stars, expresses the university’s broader spirit of exploration and ambition.
